My home theater, not just at home
Posted by Chris under Home Theater
A few months back I jumped whole-heartedly into the world of on demand and time shift/place viewing. Sure I’d been with Tivo since 2000 and early adopter of Comcast’s DVR but this like Spinal Tap says, goes to 11.
What’s that mean - in terms you can apply to the hardware you need to buy?
Well let’s start with TV. Two things happened: a new Tivo HD box got installed along with a Slingbox Pro being added to my Comcast DVR. So this means I have four video streams that can be played/recorded simultaneously. And there’s an Apple TV for streaming my content from my MBPro, thanks Apple for the software upgrade to my original Apple TV
Why,
Place shift – the sling box lets me and family in Australia and Scotland, watch live and recorded TV and On demand from anywhere. That means they can watch HBO or The Office way before they’ll get it over there as well as letting me watch when I travel.
Greater Storage. The Tivo HD allows me to add an additional hard drive. Which gives me close to 100 hours of HD or 700 hours of SD. Now there really is something always to watch
What’s next?
Stay with me and I’ll have follow-up posts on how it’s been. And with the recent Dish announcement of a slingbox in a Sat DVR box, my multi-box system is simply the prototype of what you’ll get all in one in the not to distant future.
Which Means…
What is a novelty and takes a tech to roll up today won’t. And more importantly drives the change in where, when and how Television is watched. Which of course means how we approach the advertising and marketing on it changes also.
Oh, and will I be skipping the commercials ![]()
