Let’s get social

Posted by Chris under Advertising, Chicago, Community, Conference, Google, Social Networking, Twitter

Last week Google, at their Chicago office, hosted an afternoon event on social marketing along with a rawkstar party later that evening.

The event featured two keynote speakers: Jeremiah Owyang, Sr. Analyst Forrester and Paula Drum, VP, marketing, H&R Block. It was great to meet both of them as I’d spoken with them via phone, email and twitter but not met face to face. Both of their presentations were great, as expected.

Prior to Jeremiah’s presentation he sent a tweet that I’d be tweeting the presentation and thanks to Mrs. Naslund’s Freshman typing my typing speed allowed me to keep followers up to date. Interestingly his one tweet added about 30 followers, again showing the power of social networking.

Dick Costello, that’s right of Feedburner hosted a panel discussion, which unfortunately I couldn’t stay for however you can catch the photos of the even here (thanks Kate for posting on Picasso). And in addition to the photo’s Google has also posted PDF’s of the presentation which are here as well.

If you want to see the archive of tweets from the presentations they are here, but you’ll have to go back a few pages as well.

Get out and walk with Google

Posted by Chris under Chicago, Google, Search Engines

Google Maps now offers walking directions, in addition to driving and public transportation. Just get directions as you normally would. If you’re going 10 km or less (some call this 6.2 miles), we’ll show you a link that you can click to get “Walking” directions:

If public transit directions are available for Google Maps in your area, you’ll seen an improvement to them as well. And if the route is shorten then 10km you can choose from Driving, walking or public transportation.

That’s it, now get out and walk!

Ohh and the Google LatLong Blog is a great one for all things Google Maps!

Blogging is like working out

Posted by Chris under Chicago, Travel

I’m sure I’m not the first and won’t be the last to write a post like this but after taking a few days off from most all technology. Not necessarily by choice but visiting family over the holiday in rural Illinois can leave you a bit out of the connected loop. Now don’t get me wrong visting Avon, Illinois where for the most part I grew up, except for my divorced kid travel to Amherst, is a nice diversion from the city.

Last year we got WiFi for my mom but cell service, at least for AT&T, of which I’m a subscriber, continues to be a challenge. So making a long story short I took a few days off from twitter, blogging, surfing, social networking and the internet in general.

Which meant more time for water skiing, tubing, and setting off a few fireworks. Oh, and star gazing, I always forget how the night sky really looks until a clear night visit down state.

But that takes me back to, blogging is like working out. A few days off and it’s hard to get the routine going again, just like I find with the gym/working out. Given a routine it’s great and becomes part of your daily system. A few days off and that first day back, well it’s not easy.

So I guess it’s with that note that i serve up what seems to be some tech “dish.” Happened to look at Vallywag last night and the article titled Kinderplex crisis reveals Google founder’s fumbling and fibbing, wow, trouble at Google, this referencing the New York Times article on problems at Google Day Care.

For some reason I find this interesting, maybe because it’s a public Google stumble, which is pretty darn rare.

Meet the man in the TECHNICOLOR SUIT

Posted by Chris under Chicago, Fashion

You’ve seen him dancing on the bridges or spinning outside the TV news studios. Who is that guy? His story will surprise you.

I usually start my morning by watching NBC 5, while multitasking through emails, writing, reading, etc. A few years back I saw this guy, that I’d seen on the Michigan Ave. bridge spinning in these wacky suits. My theory was that he was a rich eccentric (if he was poor he’d be crazy, right) guy doing this for some jollies.

After a deeper dive on the web I found I couldn’t have been more wrong. Recently the Tribune posted an article on Vincent, yes that’s the suit guy’s name, that you’ll find here.

You’ll also find more info on his site as well as the site for the a 90-minute documentary from Jennifer Burns about Falk, called “Vincent: A Life in Color,” which is now in the final stages of postproduction.film
